Description

This Magical Cherry Pineapple Dump Cake is an incredibly easy, warm, and comforting dessert made with cherry pie filling, crushed pineapple, yellow cake mix, and melted butter. With no mixing required, simply layer the ingredients in a 9×13-inch baking dish and bake until the topping is golden and crisp and the fruit is bubbly and syrupy. It is perfect for potlucks, holidays, family dinners, and whenever you need a simple homemade dessert that feeds a crowd.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 can (21 oz) cherry pie filling
  • 1 can (20 oz) crushed pineapple, undrained
  • 1 box (15.25 oz) yellow cake mix
  • 1/2 cup (1 stick) unsalted butter, melted
  • 1 cup chopped pecans or walnuts, optional
  • Whipped cream or vanilla ice cream, for serving, optional

Instructions

  • Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease a 9×13-inch baking dish.
  • Spread the undrained crushed pineapple evenly over the bottom of the prepared baking dish.
  • Spoon the cherry pie filling over the pineapple and gently spread it into an even layer. Do not stir the fruit together.
  • Sprinkle the dry yellow cake mix evenly over the fruit. Spread it gently into an even layer without pressing it down.
  • Drizzle the melted butter evenly over as much of the cake mix as possible. Try to minimize dry spots.
  • Sprinkle the chopped pecans or walnuts over the top, if using.
  • Bake uncovered for 45 to 60 minutes, or until the topping is golden brown and the fruit is bubbling around the edges.
  • Remove from the oven and let the dump cake rest for 10 to 15 minutes.
  • Serve warm with whipped cream or a scoop of vanilla ice cream, if desired.

Notes

  • Do not stir the layers. Keeping the fruit, cake mix, and butter separate helps create the signature crumbly, golden topping.
  • Use melted butter and drizzle it over as much of the cake mix as possible to prevent dry, powdery spots.
  • Let the cake rest for 10 to 15 minutes after baking so the fruit filling can thicken slightly.
  • A 9×13-inch baking dish works best for the proper layer thickness and to prevent overflow.
  • For variations, substitute blueberry, apple, peach, or strawberry pie filling.
  • Add shredded coconut for a tropical twist or a pinch of cinnamon for extra warmth.
  • Omit the nuts to make the dessert nut-free.
  • Store leftovers covered in the refrigerator for up to 3 days.
  • Reheat individual portions in the microwave or reheat the entire dish in a 350°F oven until warmed through. Oven reheating will help restore some crispness to the topping.
  • To freeze, cool completely, cover well, and freeze for up to 2 months. Reheat in the oven until hot and bubbly.
